Plant Growth Inhibitory Activity of Hibiscus sabdariffa Calyx and the Phytotoxicity of Hydroxycitric Acid Lactone

Weeds pose major constraints in crop production. The use of allelochemicals and allelopathic species can provide an effective alternative for sustainable weed management. In a previous study that evaluated the activity wild cultivated plants Turkey, Hibiscus sabdariffa demonstrated strongest inhibitory potential. This aimed to estimate phytotoxic influence H. water crude extracts on Lactuca sativa L. bioassay experiment. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis was used identify two compounds, hydroxycitric acid lactone hydroxy citric acid, their plant growth activities were by bioassays. Hydroxycitric had stronger estimated as allelochemical calyx. high concentration (16.7% dry weight calyx) strong effect (EC50, 73.7 ppm) could demonstrate calyx extract. showed lactone, compound sabdariffa, is inhibitor.
